Beauts Defender Marie-Jo Pelletier to Raise Funds and Awareness for “The Teacher’s Desk” in WNY
Buffalo defender Marie-Jo Pelletier is teaming up with the Beauts to raise funds and awareness for The Teacher’s Desk, a Western New York charitable organization and store where “teachers shop for free for students in need.”
For each blocked shot by Pelletier this season, the team is donating money to The Teacher’s Desk. The defender blocked 239 shots during her NCAA career for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, and once blocked 69 in a single season.
"I hoped to find a non-profit organization that helps kids in need throughout Buffalo," Pelletier said. "When I heard about The Teacher's Desk and learned about their mission, I thought it was the perfect fit. They are providing school supplies, and teachers with the resources needed to improve their classrooms. I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to help raise money for this amazing organization.”
After graduating from UNH this spring, Pelletier signed her first professional contract with the NWHL only a few months later. Excited to be playing in Buffalo, it did not take her long to become attached to her new city.
The Teacher's Desk was founded by John Mika, a retired autoworker, who first opened the store in Oct. 2011. Since that time The Teacher's Desk has distributed more than $10 million of product to teachers at schools in need throughout Western New York. Beauts community relations manager Nate Oliver has kicked off the campaign by committing $10 for every blocked shot.
"We are so thankful to MJ and the Buffalo Beauts for their kindness and generosity toward the children and teachers served by The Teacher’s Desk," said Donna Russo, a Board of Directors member. "On behalf of John and the Board of Directors, we are so thankful for your choosing to support the Desk."
